When Is the Best Time to Buy a New Car in Canada?

Last updated November 20263 min readCanadian rules and prices

Short answer

The best time to buy a new car in Canada is the last days of the month in the fall. Dealers need sales to hit their targets and they need room for the next model year. Timing helps but the price you push for matters more.

At month end I called every buyer I had talked to and told them we could do a better deal. But if the store already hit its target, you lose that edge.

What is the best time of year to buy a new car in Canada?

September to December tends to work in your favour. AutoTrader.ca names November as the strongest month.

The reason is the model year change. When next year's cars arrive the dealer has to clear last year's cars off the lot. Those cars can sell for less.

This only helps on cars the dealer has in stock. If you want a new model or a rare colour you may have to order it. Then timing matters less than the price you agree on.

Leftover cars are new and carry the full factory warranty. Ask the dealer which cars on the lot are last year's models.

Is the end of the month a good time to buy a car?

Yes. Dealers and sales staff have monthly targets. AutoTrader.ca says the pressure builds as each month ends.

A dealer one sale short of a bonus may take a smaller profit on your deal. That bonus can be worth more to them than the profit on one car.

Weekdays can help too. The lot is quiet and the staff have more time for you.

The end of a quarter can be stronger still. A quarter ends in March and June. It also ends in September and December.

Start your talks a week or two before the month ends so the deal can close in time.

Is now the best time to buy a new car if you want an EV?

In 2026 there is a clear reason to act before the year ends. The federal EVAP rebate pays up to $5,000 on an electric car in 2026.

On January 1, 2027 that drops to $4,000. The plug-in hybrid rebate drops from $2,500 to $2,000.

The rebate comes off after tax and fees. So the full amount lands on your bill.

Transport Canada says the date that counts is when the dealer files your claim. So a late December deal is a risk. Aim to sign and have the claim filed well before the holidays.

When is a bad time to buy a new car?

Spring can be slow for deals. Tax refunds and warm weather bring more buyers to the lot. Dealers have less reason to cut the price.

A brand new model is hard to buy at a discount. Demand is high and stock is low. You may pay close to MSRP for the first few months.

Wait a few months after a launch if you can. The first rush of buyers will pass.

The worst time is when you are rushed. If your old car just died you have less room to walk away. Start looking before you need the car.

Does timing matter more than the price?

No. Good timing gives you a bit more room. It does not tell you what a fair price is.

A fair price starts with the dealer cost. The gap between MSRP and dealer cost is where your discount lives. Our free Discount Report shows that gap for the trim you want.

Then get quotes from more than one dealer at the end of the month. Put them side by side and push the total down. That beats any date on the calendar.

The right moment to buy is when you know the fair price. Then any month can work.
