Short answer
You negotiate a car price over email by sending the same short request to several dealers. Ask for the all-in price before tax on one exact trim. Then show the quote with the smallest total to the dealer you like and ask them to beat it.
Email leads got pushed behind the people standing in the showroom. My manager would say just get them in, so ask for a written price before you agree to visit.

Why negotiate a car price over email?
Email takes the pressure off. No one is sitting across the desk from you. You can take your time and think.
You can reach many dealers at once. One email to five dealers takes less time than one visit to one dealer.
Email also keeps the talk on price. There is no test drive or trade-in pitch to pull you off track. You can reply at night or on the weekend.
You also get every number in writing. That makes it easy to compare offers side by side. It also gives you proof of the price when you go in to sign.
What should you write to get a car price over email?
Keep your car price over email request short. Name the year and model you want. Add the trim and the colour.
Say if you want to pay cash, finance or lease.
Ask for the all-in price before tax. Ask them to list every fee on its own line. In Ontario the all-in price must include freight, PDI and admin fees.
Say you are getting quotes from other dealers. Say you will buy this month from the dealer with the smallest total. That tells them to send a real number.
Send it to at least 3 dealers. Use the same words in each email so the quotes match. Add your postal code so they know you are close by.
How do you compare quotes?
Line up the all-in totals before tax. Ignore the monthly payment for now. A low payment can hide a long term or extra fees.
Check that each quote is for the same trim and the same options. Freight is the same at each dealer for that model. So the gap between quotes is dealer profit.
Look for add-ons you did not ask for. Rustproofing and etching often show up here. Ask the dealer to take them off.
A $500 gap between two quotes is easy to spot in writing. In person it is easy to miss.
How do you push the car price over email lower?
Reply to the dealer you like most. Share the smallest total you got and ask if they can beat it.
Be honest. Do not make up a quote. Dealers often ask to see it.
Know what the car cost the dealer. Our free Discount Report shows MSRP and dealer cost for your trim. When a quote is close to dealer cost you know it is a fair deal.
Give each dealer one clear chance to respond. Then make your choice.
Keep each reply short and polite. A dealer will work harder for a buyer who is easy to deal with.
How do you close the deal after email?
Ask the dealer to send the final price as a written quote or bill of sale. Check every line against the email.
Book a time to test drive and sign. Bring the email with you.
Bring a copy of the car price over email thread when you go in. Show it if any number has changed.
OMVIC says verbal promises are not enough and that there is no cooling-off period once you sign. So read the full contract before you put pen to paper. If the numbers do not match the email you can walk away.
